One of the most common 2024-2025 Federal Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, issues that families across the country are trying to navigate is adding missing information to an already submitted application. This has proven to be a challenging task for many families who are already nervous about working through the new FAFSA format and delays. If this sounds like your situation, keep reading! Let’s dive into the steps required to add a missing contributor’s consent/approval and missing school code(s).
Adding a Missing Contributor’s Consent/Approval
It is important to note that both the student and one parent/guardian contributor must provide consent and approval if the student is considered a dependent by federal Department of Education standards. Most often, a student’s FAFSA form is missing the parent/guardian consent, which may be because the parent/guardian has not yet created their own FSA ID. Both the student and parent/guardian must have their own FSA ID, which can be obtained on the FAFSA.ed.gov site by selecting “Create Account”.
Correction Steps:
- The contributor who has not yet provided consent and approval on the FAFSA, must login to the FAFSA.ed.gov site using their own FSA ID.
- Once logged in, navigate to the account “Dashboard”.
- Under “My Activity”, select the FAFSA that reflects “Action Required”.
- Select “Approve” and provide consent and approval.
- Navigate through the remainder of the form, and sign and submit the section of the form that pertains to the contributor (student or parent/guardian section).
Adding a Missing School Code
Students can list up to 20 schools on the electronic 2024-2025 FAFSA at one time. This is done by adding the school’s code to the relevant section of the FAFSA. It is important to note that a school cannot receive your student’s FAFSA information unless it is listed on the form.
Correction Steps:
- The student must login to the FAFSA.ed.gov site using their own FSA ID.
- Once logged in, navigate to the account “Dashboard”.
- Select the FAFSA form requiring an edit.
- Under “My Activity”, select the FAFSA submission that was processed.
- Select “Add or Remove Schools”.
- Find the pertinent school by searching the school’s code, state, city, and/or school name. Select “Search”.
- Submit the edit.
