To improve efficiency and communication regarding health insurance waivers, as of July 2024, all student health insurance waivers and enrollment will be processed through United Healthcare Student Resources.

What does this mean?

Students can now access the new waiver processing system through BlazerNET instead of the UAB Student Health Services Patient Portal! When logging onto BlazerNET students need to click “Links/Forms”, and then the “Mandatory Health Insurance Selection/Waiver” page. From the Mandatory Student Health Insurance Selection/Waiver page, there are two links, one to waive (opt-out) of student health insurance coverage, and one to add (opt-in) to insurance coverage. This change will not only allow students to waive coverage but also allow students who need coverage to proactively enroll themselves online without having to call or visit the UAB Student Health and Wellness Center. Additionally, this new process enables users to download their insurance cards and information and use their coverage right from the start date.

The final health insurance waiver deadline is September 15, 2024. After this date, any student who has not submitted a waiver will be automatically enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan. The full premium charge will start being applied on August 1, 2024. The charge will be removed for waivers submitted before the final deadline of September 15. After September 15, no refunds will be issued.

All students in degree-seeking programs who meet the following criteria must opt in or out of the Student Health Insurance plan:

• Undergraduate registered for 9+ hours
• Graduate – determined by program
• International
• Clinical regardless of credit hours

Student Health Services staff is ready to assist with any issues or questions, but the goal with the new system is to provide an easier, faster, and more transparent experience for all UAB students.
